Jan tells the story of his mission to recognize the sacrifices and losses of his generation and to help heal the people that are sent out to fight their nation’s wars.

I just said I’m going to build a memorial with the names of all the casualties from the Vietnam War to help the veterans to recover and in a larger sense to help society recover from a very traumatic and divisive time.

Jan Scruggs is a Purple Heart recipient, a PTSD survivor & expert and the founder of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the first memorial built on the National Mall in D.C. with private funding. He also currently serves as Chairman of the Selective Service National Appeals Board – a presidential appointment. Jan’s podcast, Jan Scruggs, Vietnam War Stories honors veterans and their inspiring stories of obstacles. He’s written for publications such as The New York Times and Military Times.
